Reiki

What’s that…

Often the first question I receive when I mention “Reiki”. Although its popularity has grown to the point where it is now being administered in some hospitals – many people still have not heard of Reiki.

So, what is it…

Reiki is a modality of energy healing, in which a practitioner utilizes universal energy – to assist in a clients healing. A certified Reiki practitioner will use a variety of hand placements – either lightly touching or hovered in the auric field above the client, to provide a whole-body treatment. Reiki utilizes symbols, as an option, to customize the individual needs of the client. In-person Reiki uses either none or a light touch, to transfer universal energy to the client. However, because it uses universal energy – which has no time or space…Reiki can also be performed at a distance**.

Wait, what do you mean by at a distance…

Yes, Reiki can be equally effective in person or at a distance. In fact, since the client can relax in their preferred environment – many people feel more at ease during distance sessions.

What does Reiki heal…

Reiki works with energy and can assist in healing both physical and emotional trauma. Many chronic physical ailments are not really “physical” – and have developed from unhealed emotional trauma. When we store emotional trauma in our body, they can eventually manifest into chronic physical conditions or diseases. Reiki can help to clear away residual energy and allow for the process of healing – both physical and emotional.

What can I expect…

There are a variety of sensations that can be felt during a Reiki session – from nothing at all to various degrees of emotional release. Each session is unique and catered to the individual’s healing needs at the time. Essentially, Reiki has an innate intelligence and knows what the client needs for healing.

But, what seems to be the consensus, is a deep sense of relaxation.

Almost everyone I have treated seems to agree that Reiki offers a deep sense of relaxation. Even individuals who have had difficulties slowing their constant mental activity to engage in meditation practice, seem to be calmed by Reiki. Almost, as if Reiki is a “forced meditation”. It enables tranquility that some have difficulty attaining on their own. In fact, there have been times where a client has described Reiki as feeling as if their body was asleep, but their mind was both calm and aware.

What’s the process…

Much of the components of a Reiki session is optional and open to preference, of both the practitioner and client. Reiki is effective either with eyes open or closed, both in silence or conversation – and whether it is felt or not. Some practitioners incorporate healing crystals, music, or essential oils to further specialize their client’s sessions – while others prefer to keep it simple. Other than an in-person attunement and symbol for distance – there are very few “rules” in Reiki. For the most part, Reiki is an intuitive practice – and lead by the discretion of the practitioner and client.
